Cost of Baby Formula for One Year

Raising a baby is one of the biggest expenses you’ll have in life, but unlike other expenses, it’s hard to predict exactly how much a child will cost. There’s no definitive formula you can use to assess it all, but there is a way to factor in certain costs. For instance, if you’re not going to breastfeed, you’ll need to determine the prices for organic cow milk for babies, sugar free formula and organic infant formula, depending on the type of nourishment you plan to provide for your newborn. You can expect to pay more for organic infant formula than you would for regular goat’s milk for baby.

Determining How Much Baby Eats

The first thing you’ll need to figure out when calculating how much baby formula will cost for the first year of life will be to identify how much your baby eats. If your baby isn’t born yet, you can research how much the average baby eats, which to date is around 25 ounces of regular or organic infant formula daily.

Obviously, as the baby grows, this amount will increase. Since a newborn will require less formula than a one-year old, most new parents calculate the overall cost of feedings by looking at the average consumption over the course of a year.

Another way to calculate how much a baby eats is to multiply their weight by 2.5. This number will represent how much the baby will likely drink over a 24 hour period. So if your baby weighs 10 pounds, it would like this: 10 x 2.5= 25.

Researching the Cost of Formula

There are different types of formula you can buy for your baby, such as sugar free formula or organic infant formula varieties. Whatever you choose, research how your preferred brand sells for. You will need to determine how many daily feedings your baby will be able to obtain from the one can. For instance, a 23 oz container requires you to use one ounce of formula per two ounces of water. Do the math, and you’ll see that you can make about 46 ounces of baby formula. This would only feed your 10 pound baby for about a day and a half.

The cost varies greatly from brand to brand, with the 23 ounce containers costing upwards of $13 each. Each month, you could expect to spend around $195. Over the course of one year, you would be spending over $2,300.

It’s simple to calculate how much baby formula costs over a 12 month period. Keep in mind, however, that this may fluctuate based on how much or how little your baby actually eats.
